Reading Lists

Pardon our dust...we're under construction. We'll be posting more reading lists in the next few days.

Is there a particular subject you'd like to read about in depth? Want to know what one of your favorite authors or scholars recommends? Need some suggestions on what to pack for that next vacation? Check out our reading lists compiled by dedicated readers of the American West. If you have a list of your own that you would like to share, or if you are taking a course on some aspect of the West and would like us to post the syllabus and reading list for the class, please contact us. We always obtain permission from the author of the list before we post it.

"The Spirit of the Desert West," compiled by Stephen Trimble, author of The Sagebrush Ocean: A Natural History of the Great Basin.

"Jews in the Early West," compiled by Harriet Rochlin, author of several works of fiction and non-fiction on Jews in the American West. She is currently editing a book-length women's edition of the 32-year-old quarterly, Western States Jewish History.

"Evolving Landscapes in Western Thought: Photographic Books [and Others] from the U.S. Outback," compiled by Peter Goin, Professor of Art in photography and video at the University of Nevada, Reno. His most recent book, co-authored with photographer Robert Dawson and creative writer Mary Webb, is A Doubtful River, a project that examines the complex watershed of the first federal irrigation dam and project.
